Juniors – Planning for the Future
St. Michael’s Cricket Club is proud
of its junior/youth cricket development which has consistently produced
youngsters from South West Scotland who have made their way through the
ranks of the Club here in Dumfries. Currently six regular 1st X1 players
and twelve 2nd X1 players started playing cricket in our junior programme.

Currently several St. Michael’s youngsters also play
for Dumfries & Galloway Regional
Teams and three of our recent junior players represented Scotland at various
age levels in matches at home and abroad, including all rounders Chris
Brockwell and Ross Marscheider.
Both youngsters moved on to play important roles in the
Club's First XI. Last season a group
of youngsters started to make their way from the lesser demands of the
Sunday XI into the fifty over game as
well as playing at regional level. They include recent junior players
of the year, Chris Lumb and Connor Bowie.
Practice Sessions and Games
We provide both boys and girls between
the ages of around 8 and 16 the opportunity to practice and play cricket
regardless of playing ability. Junior cricket practice takes place each
Monday 6.15-8.00 p.m. at Kingholm Park from Monday
12th April. The cost for non-members is £2 a session (free
for Junior members). Youngsters then have the opportunity to develop their
game by playing for a number of our teams:
St Michael's Under 16 and Under 12
Squads
Our new Under 16 team already has six fixtures arranged
against same age teams from across Dumfries & Galloway and
Cumbria.
It is anticipated that at least another two fixtures will
be in place for skipper Ben Johnstone’s side by the time the season
starts.
We also aim to organise a number of hardball fixtures
at Under 12 level, together with Kwik Cricket festivals
for younger players.
Hot from the Press: Our latest Kwik Cricket
Festival for primary age children took place on Friday 18th June! See
our Latest News page for a detailed report.
Dumfries Timber Company Sunday XI
The remainder of our Sunday
fixtures will also have a heavy emphasis on junior player
development to provide further playing opportunities for young
players. The fixtures are informal friendlies with senior players supporting
the youngsters as they learn.
Rico's T20 Takeaway XI
Rico's
Takeaway XI will play each week in the Dumfries Midweek League every summer.
The idea is to include as many youngsters as possible
together with a few "older hands" to help out.
The Midweek XI has persistently performed well
in the Dumfries midweek competitions, winning the Midweek League Cup in
2004 and the Midweek Shield in 2008. Last season, they came near to pulling
off a spectacular double, winning the League again and
finishing as runners-up in the newly-constituted Super Cup.
John Pagan & Son Kingholm
The Club Committee has decided that, for the 2010 season
and beyond, the Club's Second XI are committed to playing a minimum
of two Under 16 players in all Western Union Division
III league fixtures. The Club firmly believes that the 2nd X1 is a
vehicle for junior members to gain regular league cricket experience
and should be the breeding ground for future 1st X1 players.
Junior Head Coach, Davey Fallas (pictured
left) confirmed “We are all very proud of this initiative as it
gives members of our junior section the opportunity to play competitive
cricket at varying levels. It will develop not only their cricketing ability
but their confidence and self esteem.”
